Good to Great: How Unwavering Faith and Brutal Facts Shape Our Purpose

A lot of people are rich, powerful, and influential, but broken.

How can this be?

One would have thought that if a person has everything in the world, they would be complete. Yet, there is that one thing that does not let them sleep at night. Even when everyone looks at them and says, "Oh wonderful! Oh beautiful!" there remains a nagging dissatisfaction. It is the thing that makes people jump from one place to another, never able to stay in a relationship or be alone.

There is something deeper. It is not just about physical well-being. We are not just this body, this flesh, or the beauty that we see. From dust we have come, and to dust shall we return.

So why are we here on earth?

The Bible tells us that God breathed into man's nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul. In every part of the scripture, God constantly reminds us that there is a great deposit in the spirit. Sometimes our spirit picks up signals to lead us, but we are not spiritually alert to hear Him. Many people fall into temptations they never should have fallen into because they were attentive only to the flesh.

One million cells were intertwined just to form a human being. Everything needed to happen for a person to be born. God watched over them all these years to bring them to this exact moment. A person's purpose was determined right from birth.

But what does this mean for the broader world? How does this spiritual truth apply to the organizations we build, the strategies we implement, and the societies we lead?

Re-discovering purpose requires a multi-layered approach. It requires aligning the human soul, the organizational mission, and the strategic vision.

1. The Human Element: Confronting the Brutal Facts

When a person is sad and no one comes their way, the prayer is that the Spirit of God will go into the root of their life, take reposition, and lead them to where they are meant to be. We must receive His ability and strength to change our lives. He specially designed and crafted each of us, and whom the Son of Man sets free is free indeed.

In the business world, Jim Collins, author of the classic book Good to Great, writes: "You must maintain unwavering faith that you can and will prevail in the end, regardless of the difficulties, AND at the same time, have the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality."

This is the tension of human purpose. We must have the faith to believe we are divinely crafted for a purpose, yet we must have the brutal honesty to assess where we currently are. A person cannot discover their purpose if they are living in denial about their present reality.

2. The Organizational Element: Are We Facing Our Market Realities?

Just as individuals have a purpose, organizations have a purpose. A company is not just a legal entity; it is a collection of human souls working toward a common goal.

The question posed by leaders today is this: Are we facing our brutal market realities head-on while holding onto our long-term strategic vision?

Many organizations fail because they lose their "why." They become rich and powerful, but internally, they are broken. They chase trends, jump from one strategy to another, and never stay grounded in their core identity.

To move from "Good to Great," an organization must rediscover its purpose. It must look past the physical attributes, the revenue, the branding, the office spaces and look at the heart of the company. What is the spirit of the organization? What is the deposit of value it brings to the world?

When leaders are attentive to the "spirit" of their organization, they can hear the signals that guide them. They can avoid the temptations of short-term greed and focus on long-term significance.

3. The Strategy Element: Think Bigger, Perform Better

Purpose without strategy is just wishful thinking. Strategy without purpose is just busywork.

To transition from Good to Great, strategy must be deeply rooted in purpose. It requires a shift in mindset: Think Bigger. Perform Better. Lead Greater.

  • Think Bigger: This is where vision is cast. It is the unwavering faith that the organization will prevail. It is looking beyond the current quarter and seeing the legacy that will be left for future generations.
  • Perform Better: This is where the discipline of execution comes in. It is the daily grind of excellence. It is the commitment to doing the small things right, with integrity and diligence.
  • Lead Greater: This is where purpose impacts others. Leadership is not about being served; it is about serving. It is about guiding people to reach the potential God gave them.

The Ultimate Purpose

Each of us belongs to God. Whether leading a multinational corporation, managing a small team, or navigating personal life, the ultimate purpose is to align our will with the Creator's will.

When a person rediscovers their purpose, they find peace. When an organization rediscovers its purpose, it finds longevity. When strategy is built on purpose, it becomes unstoppable.

Live a life of purpose. Receive His ability and strength to change your life.

We are God's Perfect Creation, Beautiful of all Worlds.

A Prayer for Purpose in Every Arena

Father, we thank You for the breath of life. We thank You for crafting us with purpose before we were even formed in the womb.

Lord, help us to be spiritually alert. Give us the courage to confront the brutal facts of our realities, while holding onto unwavering faith in Your promises. Help us to lead our organizations and our families with integrity and vision.

May our strategies align with Your will, and may our lives reflect Your glory in every arena, whether in the boardroom, the classroom, or the home. In Jesus' name, Amen.
